Location & Terrain
Tram Chim National Park stretches over seven communes in Tam Nong District, Dong Thap, including Tan Cong Sinh, Phu Duc, Phu Tho, Phu Thanh A, Phu Thanh B, and Phu Hiep. Located 35km away from Cao Lanh City, the heart of Dong Thap province, the park sits approximately 20km north of the Mekong River branch and 170km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City.
The park boasts a unique flat terrain that slightly leans to the west and is crisscrossed by canals. These canals have significantly reduced the period of flooding in Tram Chim National Park to only six months a year. The remaining six months are flood-free, resulting in a lower water rate. Additionally, the water table in the park can be regulated by human intervention through the canal-division of zones.
Biodiversity Values
Covering an impressive land area of over 7,500 hectares, Tram Chim National Park is home to a vast mangrove forest that supports an abundance of plant and animal life. The park boasts over 130 types of vegetation, including lotus communities, grasslands, Melaleuca forests, and moldy swamps. Among them, the Melaleuca forests dominate the landscape and provide a valuable habitat for wild rice (Oryza rufipogon), one of the park’s most important plant species.
The fauna system of Tram Chim National Park is equally impressive, with over 230 bird species from 49 families, accounting for a quarter of all bird species recorded in Vietnam. The best time to visit Tram Chim National Park is during the water-rising season, which occurs between September and December. Additionally, visitors can partake in exciting activities that reflect the daily life of Westside farmers.
The dry season, from January to June, is also suitable for bird researchers. During this period, many bird species, especially Sarus cranes, migrate to Tram Chim National Park in search of a new home.
How to Get There
Traveling from Ho Chi Minh City to Tram Chim National Park is a breeze, whether by public bus or private vehicle.
By Bus
Several transportation companies, such as Hoang Minh and Tan Quoc Minh, offer direct transfer services from Sai Gon to Tram Chim. Buses depart from local bus stations, and ticket prices range from 100,000 to 200,000 VND per person. You can book buses to Cao Lanh city and continue your journey by taking the Thanh Binh route to Tram Chim.
By Car
If you prefer to drive, you can choose between two routes: N2 – 62 National Road or 01 Highway – 62 NR. Both routes meet at 844 Province Road. After crossing Tram Chim Bridge, the park is only 800 meters away on the left. The average travel time for each route is approximately 3.5 hours, covering an average distance of 143 kilometers.
