Hon Chong: An Enigmatic Formation of Stacked Stones

In the language of Vietnamese, the word “Chong” holds two meanings: “to stack” and “husband.” However, when locals mention Hon Chong, they are usually referring to its depiction as a husband. But analyzing the arrangement of these colossal stones, it appears that the first meaning is more fitting.

A Staggering Sight

Perched upon a mountain slope, Hon Chong showcases a mesmerizing display of rocks stacked upon one another. Precariously leaning towards the ocean, it appears as though they could tumble at any moment, yet they remain resolutely stable. The large boulders that form Hon Chong stand in an imbalanced position, captivating anyone who lays eyes on them for the first time. Each boulder supports and conflicts with the others in a delicate dance. As if defying gravity, the largest boulder serves as the foundation for another colossal rock, resembling a house atop a hill. On the side facing the seashore, a handprint with five fingers adds to the mystique of Hon Chong, perplexing visitors, historians, and scientists alike.

An Intriguing Origin

The name “Hon Chong” derives from its appearance and location, as it seems to huddle against another cluster of stones known as Hon Vo, or “the wife.” Not far away, the truly remarkable Hon Vo cluster can be found. However, it is worth noting that there are actually two Hon Chong clusters (the other being near Sat Thon islet), which can cause some confusion when determining which one truly represents the husband. Curious to know the answer? Come and explore for yourself.
