In the 17th century, Lord Nguyen and his army found themselves in a dire situation while fleeing from the Tay Son troops. They were thirsty and desperately needed fresh water. In a moment of desperation, Lord Nguyen lifted his sword towards the heavens and prayed, “If the Highest still wants me to be King, please provide me with food and water!” Miraculously, as he thrust his sword into the ground, a gush of fresh water sprang forth. This extraordinary place became known as Gieng Ngu, The King’s Well, or the Magic Well.
Choosing Phu Quoc as his refuge, Lord Nguyen and his army regained their strength and eventually triumphed over the Tay Son troops. This victory marked a turning point in their quest to gain control over Saigon-Gia Dinh.
