During the Indochina War, when Vietnam was under French colonial rule, the prison was referred to as the Coconut Tree Prison. It derived its name from the surrounding coconut trees that dominated the landscape. Divided into four areas named “A,” “B,” “C,” and “D,” the prison held over 14,000 prisoners demanding independence.
Following the end of the Indochina War and the signing of the Geneva Accords, most of the prisoners were released and reunited with their families. However, with the onset of the Vietnam War, the Coconut Tree Prison was rebuilt by the U.S troops and continued its operation. The prison now had separate areas for men, women, and the elderly, with a stricter security system in place.
In 1966, another section was added to the prison to accommodate more Vietnamese soldiers. With 12 main areas divided into sub-areas “A,” “B,” “C,” and “D,” the prison imposed tight supervision and stringent security measures. In 1996, the Coconut Tree Prison was opened to the public as a historical site and recognized as a national heritage.
