Neighbours

In Vietnam, the saying “Better a neighbor near than a brother far off” truly holds weight, especially in the countryside. Here, neighbor relationships often surpass blood ties in importance. Neighbors go above and beyond to help each other in both special occasions and daily life.

Whether it’s weddings, funeral ceremonies, or cultural celebrations, hardly any Vietnamese household can manage without the assistance of their neighbors. And in times of emergency, neighbors are always there to lend a helping hand. In villages, neighbors come together after a long day of work to engage in idle chats and leisurely games like Tai Chi. They even participate in communal activities, strengthening their bonds further.

However, in cities, the urban lifestyle has led many city-dwellers to isolate themselves in their private homes, avoiding unnecessary prying into their personal lives. Consequently, neighbor relationships have somewhat faded over time. But that’s not the whole story. Although people might not invite their neighbors into their homes for a cup of tea or a friendly chat, you can still find housewives engaging in lively conversations on street corners or in bustling markets. Meanwhile, husbands may gather at pubs or tea houses on different street corners. The sense of community still exists, just in a different form.

Ultimately, whether in the countryside or the city, the value of having good neighbors cannot be overstated. They offer a sense of comfort, support, and community that adds richness to our lives. So, let’s cherish our neighbors and nurture these invaluable connections.
