Welcome to the Hue Imperial Citadel, a magnificent walled fortress and palace that served as the capital city of the Nguyen Dynasty for 140 years, from 1805 to 1945. The Imperial City of Hue is a testament to Vietnam’s rich history and grandeur architecture.
A Monumental Feat of Engineering
The construction of the Imperial City began in 1803 under the visionary direction of Emperor Gia Long, who founded the Nguyen Dynasty. Over the course of 27 years, under the reign of Emperor Minh Mang, the Imperial City of Hue was completed, becoming the largest structure ever built in modern Vietnam. Thousands of workers labored tirelessly, moving millions of cubic meters of rock to shape this extraordinary landmark. Situated on the northern bank of the Huong River, it sprawls across a vast land area of 520 hectares. Despite the ravages of the Vietnam War, the site has been actively restored and preserved and was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
