History & Location
Xuan Huong Lake holds a unique place in Vietnamese history. Originally, the area was not the home of this magnificent lake we see today. In 1919 and 1923, two dams were built on a branch of Cam Ly River, forming two small lakes. Tragically, a severe storm in 1932 destroyed both dams. However, between 1934 and 1935, a larger dam was constructed using boulders, creating the single, impressive lake we now know as Xuan Huong Lake.
Formerly named Grand Lac by the French, the lake was renamed Xuan Huong Lake in 1953 as a tribute to Xuan Huong, a renowned Vietnamese female poet from the 19th century. Over time, the lake has undergone various renovations. At times, you may find it not completely filled with water, which is a rare occurrence that adds an intriguing touch to its story.
