How to Get There
Son Doong Cave is nestled in Son Trach, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province, Vietnam. Currently, there are no paved roads leading directly to the cave, making the journey to Son Doong an adventure in itself. To reach the mouth of the cave, you will embark on a thrilling trek through the dense tropical forests of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, covering approximately 10 kilometers within a span of 6 hours.
By Air
For those who can’t wait to witness the cave’s wonders, flying is the optimal choice. The nearest airport is Dong Hoi Airport, located in the capital city of Quang Binh province, Dong Hoi. Vietnam Airlines offers flights from Hanoi to Dong Hoi, while Vietjet Air provides daily flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Dong Hoi, with a travel time of around one hour.
By Train
Alternatively, you can opt for the Reunification Express trains, which operate throughout Vietnam. Due to Vietnam’s S-shape geography, train services are available from various cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Hue, Vinh, and more. Travel time varies depending on your starting point. Buses and taxis are also available, offering additional route options and flexibility. Prices and travel time may vary based on service providers and starting destinations.
From Dong Hoi, you will be transferred to Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park and eventually to the trekking point on Road 20 of Ho Chi Minh Highway by bus. Once there, it’s just you and your own two feet. To reach Son Doong, you will need approximately one day to traverse forests, hills, and rivers. Some level of fitness and endurance is required for this exhilarating journey. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to visit the ethnic village of Ban Doong and spend the night in the captivating Hang En Cave.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to explore Son Doong Cave is from February to August. During these months, the weather is cool and mild, making it perfect for trekking within the cave’s depths. However, temperatures can drop significantly at night, so be sure to pack some warm trekking jackets. From May to August, the weather becomes hotter and more humid, adding an extra layer of challenge and adventure to the expedition. Please note that the cave is closed from September to January due to flooding, making it inaccessible during this time of year.
