History
Tu Hieu Pagoda derived its name from King Tu Duc, who was deeply moved by the story of Most Venerable Nhat Dinh – the founder of this sacred place. Nhat Dinh, a devoted monk, displayed unparalleled filial piety by preparing meat and fish for his ailing mother, despite societal disapproval. “Tu Hieu,” meaning “Filial Piety,” encapsulates the essence of Buddhism’s two fundamental virtues. Emperor Tu Duc bestowed this title upon the pagoda, acknowledging Nhat Dinh’s unwavering dedication to his mother. Interestingly, Tu Duc himself was renowned for his filial responsibilities to his parents – King Thieu Tri and Queen Tu Du.
Location and Worship
Situated just 5km southwest of the city center, Tu Hieu Pagoda boasts a picturesque setting surrounded by pine forests and a tranquil stream. Its architectural grandeur adds to the allure of this sacred site. The pagoda is designed in the shape of the Chinese character “Khau” (mouth) – resembling a square. Its main building consists of three rooms and two wings. The central sanctuary is dedicated to the worship of the Buddha. Additionally, a three-story tower was constructed to house books and sculptures. Notably, the pagoda features an altar devoted to Le Van Duyet, a mandarin during Gia Long’s reign, alongside traditional altars honoring local Buddhist devotees and Quan Cong. Eunuchs, who generously donated to the pagoda, also found their final resting place in the adjacent graveyard.
The three entrance gates of Tu Hieu Pagoda are a sight to behold, featuring intricate curved domes. In the center of the upper level, visitors will find the statue of Dharma guardian (Ho Phap), overlooking a beautiful lotus pond. Stele houses, engraved with the pagoda’s history, grace both sides of the courtyard – offering a glimpse into its intriguing past.
The Legacy of Thich Nhat Hanh
Tu Hieu Pagoda is also renowned for being the root temple of The Most Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh – a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, teacher, author, poet, and peace activist who now resides in France.
