Location & History
Legend has it that the pagoda got its name, Thien Mu, which means “Lady from Heaven,” from an old lady in red who appeared on top of the hill. She prophesied that the Lord would pass by and construct something of great importance. Impressed by the legend, Lord Nguyen Hoang decided to build the pagoda on Thien Mu Son, or the Mountain of Lady from Heaven. Despite facing numerous challenges and undergoing renovations over the years, the pagoda has stood the test of time.

What To See
As you approach Thien Mu Pagoda, your eyes will be drawn to the magnificent Phuoc Duyen Tower. This seven-storey octagonal tower, also known as Tu Nhan Tower, was built in the mid-19th century to commemorate the 80th birthday of King Thieu Tri’s grandmother.

Upon passing through the grand three-door gate, you’ll encounter twelve imposing wooden sculptures of temple guardians. In the heart of the pagoda lies the Dai Hung Palace, the main sanctuary. Inside, you’ll find intricate Buddha sculptures and a massive two-ton bell, which has been in existence since the early 18th century. The air is filled with the fragrance of incense, creating a serene ambiance for prayer and contemplation.
Notably, there is a building in the rear of the complex that houses a national relic—the car that carried the Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc, who self-immolated in 1963 in protest against the anti-religion policy of Saigon’s regime.

On special occasions such as the 15th of April and July in the Lunar Calendar, as well as during Tet Holiday, the pagoda hosts unique ceremonies that visitors may find fascinating.
