The Ancient Tale of Phu Tay Ho
Built in the 17th century, Phu Tay Ho is dedicated to Princess Lieu Hanh, a prominent figure in Vietnamese history. She holds a revered position in the Mother Goddesses cult (Dao Mau) and rules over the celestial realm. According to folklore, Princess Lieu Hanh was once Princess Quynh Hoa, the beloved daughter of the Jade Emperor in heaven. However, due to a mistake she made, she was banished to Earth and named Lieu Hanh.
Captivated by the enchanting beauty of Tay Ho, Princess Lieu Hanh decided to settle on the peninsula. During her time there, she fearlessly protected the locals from ghosts and other dangers. It was during a boat trip on the lake that she crossed paths with Phung Khac Khoan, also known as Trang Bung. Their meeting sparked a close bond, and they spent their days together writing poetry and relishing in the lake’s natural scenery. However, Princess Lieu Hanh eventually left, leaving behind a nostalgic Phung Khac Khoan and the locals, who then established a temple in her honor. This marked the beginning of Phu Tay Ho, which is now managed by the Tay Ho government.
The Beauty of Structure and Architecture
One of the striking features of Phu Tay Ho is its grand three-door gate, intricately carved with three entrances and two stories. This architectural marvel is reminiscent of other pantheons dedicated to the Mother Goddesses. The temple’s main structure consists of three smaller temples, with the largest being the front house. The inner palace at the back of the front house houses the statue of Mother Goddess Lieu Hanh. Other notable features of the temple include the Fang pavilion (Phuong Dinh), Son Trang Palace, Co-Floor, and Cau Pagoda. Every detail, from the glorious gate to the walls, is meticulously designed and exquisitely carved. The temple is also adorned with antique relics, including frescoes at the door, a votive table, and a royal seat, all in the style of 19th-century Vietnam.

The Phu Tay Ho festival takes place annually from the 3rd to the 7th of the Lunar Calendar, honoring Princess Lieu Hanh. The festival includes a captivating goddess’ palanquin parade that travels from Phu Tay Ho through various streets, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. During these days, the temple is filled with pilgrims and visitors who come to pray for health, peace, and fortune. It is also an excellent opportunity to immerse oneself in local traditions, including traditional music, dancing, and poetry contests.

Phu Tay Ho welcomes pilgrims and tourists daily from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM (5:00 PM to 9:00 PM on the 1st and 15th day of every Lunar month). This temple is particularly popular during Tet (Lunar New Year), attracting locals who bring incense and votive offerings to pray for blessings. Even if you’re not there to pray, Phu Tay Ho offers a peaceful retreat where you can relax and enjoy the magnificent landscapes by the lake.
