A Glimpse into History
Commissioned by King Minh Mang in 1840, this splendid tomb was completed two years later by his successor, King Thieu Tri. The monument stands as a testament to the Nguyen Dynasty’s legacy and the grandeur of Vietnamese architecture.
Architectural Marvels
Claimed to be the most magnificent of all the imperial tombs, Minh Mang Tomb boasts an intricately designed complex consisting of 40 structures, including palaces, temples, and pavilions. The harmonious fusion of human craftsmanship and natural beauty is a sight to behold.

The centerpiece of the tomb is the Than Dao, a symmetrical axis leading from the Great Red Gate to the foot of the King’s tomb. Along this path, you’ll encounter two additional gates: the Left Rad Gate and the Right Red Gate, both leading to the Honour Courtyard. Here, rows of stone statues depicting mandarins, elephants, and horses stand in solemn tribute.
Ascending Mount Phung Than, you’ll find the square Stele Pavilion, housing the stele “Thanh Duc Than Cong” that chronicles the King’s biography and achievements. Accessible through the Hien Duc Gate is the Sung An Temple, dedicated to King Minh Mang and his wife. Three stone bridges flank the temple, with the marble bridge reserved exclusively for the king. Finally, the Hoang Trach Gate leads to the Minh Lau Pavilion, situated on three terraces symbolizing heaven, earth, and water. The tomb area is embraced by the crescent-shaped Ho Tan Nguyet, a picturesque lake, and a circular wall called Buu Thanh.

From a distance, Minh Mang Tomb resembles a reclining figure, with the hill serving as the pillow and its surrounding elements extending towards the river. Spanning nearly 700 meters from the front gate to the back door, the tomb offers unobstructed views of the nearby mountains and the majestic Cam Ke Hill.

While traveling by car or motorbike is convenient thanks to the Tuan Bridge, an alternative and equally enchanting option is to embark on a boat trip along the Perfume River. This allows you to explore not only Minh Mang Tomb but also other nearby attractions such as Thien Mu Pagoda and Hon Chen Temple. Negotiate with local boat owners for a reasonable price, which will depend on the number of sites and the distance covered.
