History
In 1070, during the reign of Ly Thanh Tong, the construction of the Hanoi Temple of Literature commenced. Originally dedicated to Confucius, it later became a revered institution for Vietnam’s learned individuals. King Ly Nhan Tong further expanded the complex in 1076 by establishing Quoc Tu Giam, the first university in Vietnam.
Structure & Architecture
Stepping into the Temple of Literature is like entering a world where time stands still. The complex is divided into five distinct courtyards, each bearing its own significance and historical tales. As you explore, you’ll encounter the Khue Van Cac pavilion, which you may recognize as the symbol adorning street signs all over Hanoi.
The third courtyard is home to tombstones that bear the names of 1307 doctors, representing 82 examination courses from 1442 to 1779. During the beginning of the year and in May, when important examinations take place, you’ll witness countless students visiting the temple and rubbing the tortoise head. This act is believed to bring them luck and success in their tests.
Moving on, the fourth courtyard pays homage to Confucius and his 72 esteemed students, as well as Chu Van An, a renowned teacher revered for his dedication to education. This courtyard is where Hanoi’s local authorities celebrate exceptional students who excel in entrance exams or graduate with outstanding results. Finally, the Thai Hoc house, situated in the last courtyard, was once the Quoc Tu Giam, Vietnam’s first university.
