Location & History
Dong Khanh Tomb boasts a fascinating history that spans over 35 years and four kings. Despite facing numerous challenges during its construction, this architectural marvel stands as a testament to the perseverance and dedication of those involved. As you wander through the tomb’s grounds, you’ll be captivated by the stories that echo through its ancient walls.
Intriguingly, King Dong Khanh, an adopted son of King Tu Duc, took the throne under the French colonists’ guidance. Following his coronation, he commissioned the construction of Truy Tu Temple within his father’s tomb, Kien Thai Vuong. Unfortunately, King Dong Khanh’s untimely passing at the age of 25, just three years after ascending to power, prevented him from planning his own final resting place. As a result, during King Thanh Thai’s reign, when the country faced instability, the late king was worshipped at Truy Tu Temple, which was later renamed Ngung Hy Temple. King Dong Khanh’s simple burial site can be found on a nearby hill named “Ho Thuan Son,” 30m west of Ngung Hy Temple. The entire tomb area is known as Tu Lang. It was not until 1917, under the reign of Khai Dinh, King Dong Khanh’s son, that most of the construction work was completed.
