Before the opening of Dong Ba Market, there was a grand market named Qui Gia Thi outside of Chanh Dong Gate in the reign of King Gia Long. The market was later renamed Dong Ba Market and has been serving as the main resource of food for palaces, hospitals, army camps, and dormitories of national universities for over a century. Despite undergoing several projects, Dong Ba Market still retains its old-world charm.

With its nine new buildings and four new sections ranging from seafood to clothes, the market spans an impressive area of 16,000 m2. Like most Vietnamese markets, Dong Ba is divided into different sections based on the types of products available. The upper floor is dedicated to garment and clothing stalls.
