Location & History
Built between 1933 and 1937, under the reign of King Bao Dai, the last king of Vietnam’s feudal court, the Bao Dai Summer Palace is a masterpiece of art deco architecture. Nestled in the heart of a pine forest near the Pasteur Institute, it served as a retreat for the royal family to escape the scorching heat of summer. However, after the return of the French colonialists in 1950, the palace assumed the role of the king’s office and residence. Today, it can be found on Trieu Viet Vuong Street.

What To See
As you explore the two-story structure, you’ll be transported back in time, witnessing the royal family’s daily life through 25 intricately decorated rooms. The ground floor, used as the king’s workplace, houses the office room, guest room, and reception room. Upstairs, you’ll find the living quarters of the king and his family. One of the highlights is the King’s bedroom, featuring a magnificent balcony known as the “watching moon” balcony, where the king and queen could admire the enchanting moonlight. Each room reflects the owner’s personality and status, with the eldest son’s room adorned in luxurious yellow hues and the queen’s room reflecting her feminine touch.

Inside the palace, you’ll find a treasure trove of well-preserved artifacts. Marvel at the sculptures depicting the royal family, the life-size white bust of Bao Dai himself, and the smaller gold and brown bust of his father, Khai Dinh. Other notable items include a picture of Angkor Wat, a gift from King Sihanouk of Cambodia, and an engraved glass map of Vietnam.
How To Get There
Situated in the heart of Dalat, Bao Dai Summer Palace is easily accessible from the central market. Hop in a taxi or xe om (motorbike taxi) for a short ride that will take you to this historical gem in just a few minutes. The palace is open from 7 am to 11 am and 1:30 pm to 4 pm, and the entrance fee is a mere US$1. Please note that shoes must be removed at the entrance, and there is an additional fee for bringing in cameras.
