This magnificent complex comprises not just a cathedral, but also a lake, a stone church, Phuong Dinh (bell house), and three artificial grottoes. The moment visitors set their eyes on the square lake along the main road leading to the cathedral, its allure is undeniable. At the center of the lake, a small island stands adorned with a statue of Jesus Christ.
As you continue your journey, Phuong Dinh commands attention with its stunning stone carvings embellishing the walls. This architectural masterpiece stands tall at 25 meters high, 17 meters wide, and 24 meters long, boasting three stories. The middle and upper floors house a grand drum and an imposing bell respectively. Venture further and you’ll be greeted by the magnificent cathedral, officially known as “Nha tho Duc Me Man Coi,” which was constructed in 1891. Stretching an impressive 74 meters in length, 21 meters in width, and 15 meters in height, the cathedral boasts four roofs and is built using six rows of monolithic ironwood. Within its walls, you’ll discover four small churches, each with its own unique style.
Adjacent to the grand cathedral stands the stone church. Originally named “Nha Tho Trai tim Vo Nhiem Nguyen Toi Duc Me,” it is now commonly referred to as the “Stone Church” due to its construction entirely from stone, from its walls and pillars to its ground and tie beams. The interior of the church is adorned with intricately carved reliefs, featuring chrysanthemums, bamboo, fir trees, and apricot trees, symbolizing the changing seasons.
